Fire Curtains and Fire Barriers

fire curtains and smoke curtainsAutomatic Fire Curtains are designed to seal off a designated area to prevent fire spreading throughout a building. To contain the pressure caused by a fire, fire curtains run through guide channels either side of the barrier to retain the fire curtain material.
Our fire curtains are manufactured in accordance with BS EN1634-1, BS 476 Parts 6, 7 & 22.8, & BS 7346-3. and  PAS 121: 2007

Fire operate only in response to a signal from either a fire alarm, or a locally positioned detector.
Once installed, an efficient fire curtain offers a range of benefits:

  • A fire separating element within the building structure – mounted either horizontally or vertically, which stops the travel of fire, smoke, heat and superheated gases long enough for evacuation to take place.
  • Enables architects and building engineers to integrate fire compartmentation  to limit the spread of fire as part of  the total SHEVS (smoke heat and exhaust ventilation) system,
  • Can be set to deploy after a predetermined period of time, to a pre-defined position to assist with protected means of escape.
  • Once triggered by an alarm and initially partially deploying to a fixed position, the barrier contains a smoke layer reservoir, allowing valuable time for evacuation. After a pre-set period of time it then descends completely to seal off the opening.

fire curtains and smoke curtainsModern active automatic fire curtains are an integral part of total fire engineering solutions, providing building engineers and designers with an effective alternative to traditional fire shutters and allowing a far greater flexibility in design for both refurbishment and new buildings.

Optimizing open space within buildings is becoming ever more important. However, this must be achieved in compliance with ever tightening legislation. Current legislation covering fire separating elements and fire compartmentation can be easily checked by visiting online sites such as British Standards Institute.

New Active fire curtains can now replace non-load bearing walls of up to 54 metres in length, opening up some exciting design possibilities for architects and construction engineers. Modern fabric technology provides up to 4 hours fire integrity, together with superior radiation and insulation properties. Curtains can be used to create virtual lift lobbies and to protect escalators and stairwell s, as well as in conjunction with non fire-rated glass. Fire Curtains provide an effective alternative to fire shutters and fire doors and are used extensively as part of total fire engineered solutions in domestic fire curtain, commercial and industrial applications such as airports, shopping centres, offices, factories etc, where the need for maintaining open areas for access is vital. When fully retracted a fire curtain provide a less cumbersome and more aesthetic alternative to other traditional fire compartmentation elements.

Fire Curtains technology is totally safe. Gravity fail-safe is incorporated as standard to ensure that the system operates in the event of total mains, wiring and/or system corruption. Systems are also supplied with battery back up and emergency power source for protection against a prolonged mains failure.
